Dark, dangerous and compelling. September 9, 2009 Sonya Blair 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I didn't know what to expect with this read, The Story of O. I had heard about this erotic novel of bdsm for years before I took the plunge and I five it five stars because it is a classic novel that most everyone has heard of, if not read. Having said that, let me say that this is not your typical erotica. It goes much deeper than that and it is dark. I liked the story and was very drawn into it and had to keep reading, sometimes having my eyes almost pop out of my head. Without giving away any plotlines, I will say that O and Sir Stephen really have a wicked game of love, lust and submission and dominace. It's riveting, to say the least. I would also recommned Breaking the Girl and Eager to Please: Two Erotic Novels of Submission, which is a tad lighter than this.
Story of O March 15, 2009 H. HUNT (UK) Might be a surprise if you have no previous knowledge of book but very interesting details of a submissve female responding to her master/masters
A love story. February 1, 2009 Binary Star (Hertfordshire, England) I enjoyed this a lot. It was actually quite time, as erotica goes, but delicately written. The character of O is sublimely submissive and the tale is told beautifully.
The Identity of Pauline Reage January 17, 2009 Martin Slythe (UK) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Story of O was written by Anne Desclos. Dominque Aury, cited as the author in the blurb above, was another of Desclos' noms de plume. Desclos was a highly successful literary critic and an editor at the prestigious Gallimard press in Paris. Her identity as the author of Story of O was carefully suppressed until relatively late in her life, despite that the book was always - and justifiably - admired by leading writers and critics. Indeed, it was the inspiration for one of Susan Sontag's greatest essays, the Pornographic Imagination. Desclos did not write the 'sequel' Return to Roissy.

An erotic masterpiece December 12, 2007 D. Arceneaux 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I don't know what I could possibly add to any discussion of this erotic masterpiece, so I'm happy just to contribute my voice to the chorus of praise. Miss Reage's "love letter" is as potent now as it ever was. Please give us more strong, self-assured women like Pauline Reage, Belle de Jour and Niki Flynn!
